KOLKATA: Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Thursday urged teachers in various schools affiliated to West Bengal Board of Secondary Education to devote some more time and attention to academically backward students who hail from poor families and those who are unable to take private tuitions.

Speaking at the inauguration of Nivedita Bhavan (a new administrative building constructed by WBBSE) in Salt Lake, the CM said, "Not all the students will do well. What about those who get a mere second division and are eventually elbowed out? Those families who have the money can afford to engage tutors — one, two, three — to help their child make up the gap and get good marks. But what about those who can't? Can we just wash our hands of the matter? I would request teachers to pay extra attention to them. The board must ensure that the teachers take extra classes if required for these kids and allocate more time."
